I'm sitting here in a bit of disbelief that I am writing my first blog post on my new website. Some of you may remember my old site All Buttond Up and the blog I kept there when I was first returning to some semblance of a creative life (not that giving birth to two children isn't the ULTIMATE act of creation, but I was making art again). I had begun designing jewelry using vintage buttons. As my friend Pixie likes to tease, I was the epitome of a buttoned up woman, despite my business name. I was not living my life authentically and instead, I was backing away from my life and frantically trying to glue all the broken places together before anyone noticed.
Maybe glue is the common denominator. I still use glue, and lots of it. Since those days of small children and small round objects, I've found a new way to communicate with the world. Now my medium is collage and, as I said in my book Strange Diary, I love the metaphor of tearing apart an image and re-imagining it as something new, just like life! I was once a stay-at-home mother who longed for creative collaboration and I'm now a full-time artist and small-business owner. I am re-partnered with a ninja poet and creative adventuress who is the ultimate yin to my yang. What a long strange trip it’s been.
